Women Empowerment: Yvette Lane

Meet Yvette Lane

Women in Construction week is from March 2nd through March 8th, with the 2025 theme being "Together We Rise".

In the United States, over 1.3 million women are employed in the construction sector, compared to more than 10 million men. 1 in 7 jobs have gone to women, helping to maintain the share of women in construction at just over 14 percent.

Yvette is in the construction industry, specifically working as a project manager in commercial concrete. She manages projects and ensure everything runs smoothly from start to finish.

"I decided to pursue a career in construction because I want to build and create a space where children who don’t have much can go after school for homework help, meals, and life skills development. Essentially, I want to create a non-profit for children who don’t have much."

"When I struggle, I remind myself that it’s only temporary and it is all up to me and my outlook on it. I tend to listen to soothing music and positive podcasts. I work on self-compassion and remind myself to be kind to myself. "

Do you allow others to give you advice?

Yes, I definitely allow others to give me advice. Learning from others is a highlight for me. There is always room for improvement. The phrase ‘steel sharpens steel’ is one of the best pieces of advice I’ve received. It signifies the idea that positive relationships with strong individuals can lead to personal development and growth.

What is something you wish you knew sooner?

If I would have known what I know now about construction, I would’ve joined this industry many years ago. I have a passion for this industry; it’s extremely rewarding.

Words of advice for someone who is starting off or struggling?

Keep on pushing and striving for success. You will definitely get to where you want to be, but you have to work for it. If you fall, get back up and keep on trying. Also, it’s never too late, no matter the age, the background, or the upbringing. If others can, why can’t you?

What is something you want everyone to know?

It’s never too late to chase your dreams. Also, that the construction industry has endless possibilities and positions, and women are needed in it. We are resilient, strong, and have so much attention to detail. The construction industry would be soaring with success even more than it is.

What do you see for yourself in the future?

In the future, I see myself being a small business woman owner, spending more time with the community. I want to make an even bigger impact in women’s lives and show them that success is possible, no matter where they come from.

Anyone you want to thank for helping you get where you are now?

I want to thank my husband and my children for the ultimate support. My husband is the greatest partner anyone can have. Also, I remind myself to thank myself for not giving up and for keeping moving forward. As women, we often are hard on ourselves. We have to be our biggest cheerleaders.
